6lowpan -- IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Area Networks
The IETF 6lowpan Working Group aims to define the transport of IPv6 over IEEE 802.15.4 low-power wireless personal area networks.
You can find out more about the IETF WG at http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/6lowpan-charter.html. The mailing list archive is at https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/6lowpan.
This site is about capturing information in a more real-time time scale than that possible through the official IETF web pages. The intention is that we use this as a resource of the WG, not to replace the mailing list or the Internet-drafts archive, but to supplement it for information that is not as transient as E-Mail and not as gellified as an Internet-Draft should be.

The "use cases" and "routing requirements" informational documents are nearing last-call, as is the HC (header compression) specification. ND may also be last-called after another revision, expected in August. A new version of the security document is available and now needs review.
Among the not-yet-chartered work, fragment recovery is proceeding. There was no consensus to deprecate RFC 4944 fragmentation procedures.
Another interesting item of work was sparked by a talk by Juergen Schoenwaelder, who discussed deployment models for SNMP in 6LoWPAN networks. Unfortunately, time was not sufficient to discuss the 6LoWPAN MIB proposal.

The new IETF ROLL WG (Routing Over Low power and Lossy networks) is now set up, We spent some time at the meeting to clarify the relationship between the WGs, in particular with respect to I-Ds whose content needs to be re-shuffled between the WGs. We also now have a clear way forward with the specific items on the new charter of the WG. Minutes are forthcoming; a first glance can be taken from the chairs' slides as they were updated during the meeting.

As the format document has been approved by the IESG on May 1st, the focus of this meeting was on rechartering. We discussed contributions to essentially all of the proposed charter items, except for 5 (security). Due to the RSN/R2LN initiative to be proposed at the RTGAREA meeting, we decided to reduce item 4 to just defining the (L2/L3 agnostic) requirements for routing. Item 3 was extended to include an actual Architecture Document in addition to the application scenarios. The purpose is not to write a textbook, but to collect answers to the questions that have been holding us up in defining the specific 6lowpan specifications now on the charter.

The 6lowpan working group met on Monday March 19 during Morning Session (0900-1130).
The agenda focused around:
- Finishing the format document (based on IESG comments received)
- Nailing down the charter proposal for the next round
The problem statement document has been approved by IESG.

6lowpan met on Friday, Mar 24th, from 0900 to 1130 at Monet at the 65th IETF (Hilton Anatole in Dallas, TX, US).
We discussed the format document (which, after small revisions, will go into WGLC). Once the format passes WGLC, we will submit both problem statement and format specification to IESG, completing our charter (expected within the next 6 to 8 weeks).
We also extensively discussed a proposal for a new WG charter, designed to allow completion by December 2006, which will have five deliverables (see slides); we achieved in-room consensus after some minor modifications and now need to draft the charter and discuss this with the ADs.
Finally, we worked on a number of technical issues (ND optimization, mesh routing), but ran out of time. Assuming that we get re-chartered, we plan to schedule an Interim in the second half of May, possibly co-located with an 802.11/.15 Interim, or possibly in Europe.
